Al Ahly will become the first African club invited to compete in Barcelona’s Joan Gamper Trophy, Mohammed Al-Owais has returned to Al Hilal on a two-year deal, and Mostafa Shobeir’s World Cup goalkeeper ranking has sparked debate after he finished eighth.

Al Ahly Make Joan Gamper Trophy History

What Is It About
Al Ahly are set to make history as the first African club invited to compete in Barcelona’s Joan Gamper Trophy. The Egyptian giants will face Barcelona at the Spotify Camp Nou on August 19 in the annual match where Barça presents its first-team squad to fans before the new season.

Why It Matters
This is a major moment for African and Arab football. Al Ahly are the world’s most decorated football club, and now they return to face Barcelona nearly 20 years after their 2007 meeting in Cairo, when Barça played in Al Ahly’s centenary celebration and won 4-0 with Lionel Messi, Xavi, Andrés Iniesta and Samuel Eto’o involved.

What’s Next
The match could bring together major names from both sides, with Lamine Yamal, Pedri, Raphinha, Mohamed El Shenawy, Emam Ashour and Zizo expected to feature. For Al Ahly, it is another global-stage fixture against one of football’s biggest clubs.

Al-Owais Returns To Al Hilal After Al Ula Spell

What Is It About
Saudi Arabia goalkeeper Mohammed Al-Owais has returned to Al Hilal on a two-year contract after spending last season with Al Ula. The move brings him back to the Riyadh giants, where he previously played from 2022 to 2025.

Why It Matters
Al-Owais is one of Saudi football’s most experienced goalkeepers. He previously spent five years with Jeddah-based Al Ahli before joining Al Hilal, and remains remembered for his role in Saudi Arabia’s historic 2-1 win over Argentina at the 2022 World Cup.

What’s Next
Al-Owais now starts another chapter with Al Hilal after also impressing at the 2026 World Cup, where he made nine saves against Uruguay. His return adds experience and depth to Al Hilal’s goalkeeping options ahead of the new season.

Shobeir Ranking Sparks World Cup Goalkeeper Debate

What Is It About
Egypt goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir ranked eighth among World Cup goalkeepers with a 7.67 rating. Portugal’s Diogo Costa topped the list with an 8.45 rating, while Spain’s World Cup-winning goalkeeper Unai Simón ranked sixth with 7.72.

Why It Matters
The ranking sparked debate because Simón was not placed first despite winning the World Cup with Spain and reportedly conceding only one goal all tournament. Shobeir’s place also kept him among the tournament’s highest-rated goalkeepers after a strong campaign with Egypt.

What’s Next
The debate now centres on how goalkeeper rankings are judged: individual saves and match ratings versus clean sheets, trophies and tournament impact. For Shobeir, finishing inside the top 10 adds another strong marker to his breakout World Cup run.
