Bahrain Appoint Sánchez, South Korea Raise Asian Cup Concerns And Hamza Joins Barça Squad

Hey hey hey, Smashi Sports Fam! 🌟⚽
From Bahrain’s new national team coach to security questions around the 2027 Asian Cup and another major Hamza Abdelkarim step, there’s plenty happening across regional sport. Bahrain have appointed Félix Sánchez as head coach, South Korea have raised concerns over the Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia, and Hamza has been named in Barcelona’s Champions League squad to face Galatasaray.

Bahrain Appoint Félix Sánchez As Head Coach

What Is It About
Bahrain have appointed Félix Sánchez as their new national team head coach, replacing Dragan Talajić. The Spaniard takes over after Bahrain’s difficult recent run, including a winless Khaleeji 27 title defence.

Why It Matters
Sánchez arrives with major regional experience, having led Qatar to the 2019 Asian Cup title and later coached them at the 2022 World Cup. Bahrain will hope that experience can help guide their rebuild after parting ways with Talajić.

What’s Next
Sánchez begins his duties in November, with the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia among his first major challenges.

South Korea Raises Asian Cup Security Concerns

What Is It About
South Korea has raised concerns over the 2027 Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia amid security tensions. The Korea Football Association says it is closely monitoring the situation and remains in contact with the AFC, while stressing that any decision about the tournament’s future rests with the continental governing body.

Why It Matters
The concern follows recent attacks on Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport, after which South Korea raised its travel warning for Saudi Arabia to Level 3. Citizens have been advised to leave unless their presence is essential, putting planned football travel under review.

What’s Next
South Korea had been planning a November friendly against Saudi Arabia, but alternative arrangements are now being considered. Saudi Arabia is still scheduled to host the Asian Cup from January 7 to February 5, 2027, and no relocation or postponement has been announced by the AFC.

Hamza Abdelkarim Named In Barcelona Champions League Squad

What Is It About
Egyptian youngster Hamza Abdelkarim has been named in Barcelona’s 22-man squad for tonight’s Champions League clash against Galatasaray. The 18-year-old receives the call-up as Hansi Flick deals with key absences in the squad.

Why It Matters
Raphinha and Frenkie de Jong are both sidelined, opening the door for Hamza to be involved on a major European night. After already making history as the first Egyptian to play an official match for Barcelona, he could now make his Champions League debut.

What’s Next
Barcelona face Galatasaray tonight, and the focus will be on whether Flick gives Hamza minutes. If he comes on, it would mark another major step in his rapid rise with the first team.
